Thailand still offers its visitors the best value for money

Due to political tensions and ongoing demonstrations last year many travellers decided not to visit Thailand. The occupation of the international airport in Bangkok from November 25 to December 3 by members of the People’s Alliance for Democracy was a major blow for the country’s pivotal tourism industry. All flight services to and from Bangkok were cancelled, leaving a significant amount of travellers stranded.

However, since December 5, 2008, Suvarnbhumi International Airport is in full operation again and the nation’s political situation has stabilised. No need to worry as Thailand can safely be visited again.

The following ten activities or attractions should not be missed when visiting ‘the Land of Smiles.’

1) Visit one of the elephant camps in Northern Thailand and learn to be a mahout.
2) Take a train ride crossing the famous River Kwai Bridge and then visit the memorial museum, Hellfire Pass.
3) Rent a long-tail boat and navigator for one day in Krabi and go island hopping.
4) Explore the mysterious Golden Triangle in Chiang Rai province.
5) Experience the ‘Hong by Starlight’ kayak tour in Phang Nga that is organised by John Gray.
6) Navigate out to the Similan Islands’ crystal clear waters, off Khao Lak. Dive or snorkel in the fish-filled waters or have a laid-back picnic on   the magnificent white sandy beaches.
7) Cruise along the mighty Chao Phraya River onboard a beautifully restored rice barge.
8) Learn the ancient art of traditional Thai massage at Bangkok’s Wat Po or just have one.
9) Discover Phang Nga Bay’s hidden secrets.
10) In March you could go and see a unique match of polo played by elephants in the King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament.
