Banthai village in Chiang Mai

Today seven centuries old Chiang Mai has been transformed from an ancient Lanna city to the Asian glamour of the holiday brochures. Numerous small hotel establishments such as Rachamankha and the Chedi invite the mobile and the young. The city’s latest asset is known as Banthai Village, positioned Thapae Road Soi 3 just beyond the Buparam Buddhist temple. This establishment charmingly blends a modern design with a classic ambience.

The hotel is ideally located within convenient walking distance of both the bustling night bazaar and the old part of town’s Thapae Gate. Due to this unique position the guests at the hotel are cuddled between the modern and ancient. The architectural style of the white-stucco building represents the resemblance of a traditional Lanna house. During my stay I was accommodated in one of the seven superior guestrooms on the 2nd floor. Compared with many other rooms at luxurious hotels this unit provides much more space and comfort. In addition, I enjoyed a stunning courtyard view. On the veranda I was delighted to find a large wooden seat from which I could appreciate the scenery.

Superior room at the Banthai Village in Chiang Mai

Facilities in the room included: a comfortable reading chair, a big double bed, large closet, a plasma TV and DVD player. After working on my laptop in my room for several hours, I didn’t get that cramped feeling like I use to have in my Bangkok apartment.

A window provided access to the warm sunlight, which illuminated the spacious bathroom. Positioned at one corner of the bathroom was a large tub and on the other a standing shower. Chaise lounges surrounded the courtyard’s modestly-sized pool. I couldn’t find a fitness room but who needs that anyway in Chiang Mai, which is a great city for walking trips.

The internet connection in the room was of a tormenting slow speed. My first stroll was to the corner of Soi 3, where a coffee shop offered fast and free internet services. The breakfast at Banthai was served off the courtyard in a cosy refurbished barn. One of the few low points I’d experienced here were the rather limited breakfast choices of only a bowl of congee or scrambled egg and ham so I did decide not to try dinner.

My final conclusion is that Banthai Village is a charming small lodging establishment in a terrific location, very convenient for weekenders wishing to get around while walking. It is nearby to vibrant Thapae Road, but still at a far enough distance to allow solitude and calmness. Your first impression might be that the hotel is rather small. However, the spacious guestrooms definitely let guests stretch out. You may want to browse the Banthai Village website for detailed information.
